Sharing a few from a session with a recent sweetie. She was such a beautiful little gal! Stubborn when it came to getting her to sleep though. Awww, it's always so much fun to spend time with a couple on the eve of their wedding. The love just radiated between these to lovebirds. This is a wedding that I shot back in December. I am sad to say that I won't be shooting weddings in 2010 due to the upcoming arrival of our little bundle of joy. I was referred to this gorgeous family a few months back. Model material... really! Mom wanted some pictures of her family while her kids were home from college. I almost didn't know what to do with myself since I didn't have to do my usual monkey dance to get any young kiddos to look at me. I loved the color combination that this family chose. So cute! Did I mention that they were GORGEOUS!

The Coke sign... revisited {Gilbert Arizona Family Photography}

After my last session, by the Coke sign, my hubby was watching while I edited the pictures. He had a great idea. He reminded me that the restaurant that the Coke sign is attached to sells the old glass coke bottles. He suggested that we should have the people drinking the Coke underneath the sign. Great Job Hubs! I like the way that this turned out! The funniest part is that the mom of these four cute girls is a HUGE Coke fan, so it worked out perfect. Thanks for such a fun session "B" Girls!

Last week, I was able to photograph this darling family at what seems to be my most requested spot lately. It's OK with me, though, because there's so much stuff to shoot with there. I had lots of fun with the "G" family! I loved that Dad couldn't take his eyes off of little "G." So cute! In the second one, Mom needed an updated headshot, and I was glad to oblige. She's such a babe. The last one is a play on the painting American Gothic from the 1930s. You all know which one I'm talking about!

This is my entry for the I heart faces contest of the week. This is from our family session about a month ago. The wind caught the balloon at just the right moment. I changed the orientation of my camera and I really like the result. The little girl with the balloon in the front is my niece. We gave her the balloon to cheer her up. As you can tell, at this moment, it didn't exactly do the trick, but I think that's why I like this photo so much :)

We did everything we could, and little baby "O" wanted no part of falling asleep. He finally gave up for the last 10 minutes of our session. Usually I'm a huge fan of sleepy baby pictures, but I love this one of him wide awake. There's just so much going on in his little head. Thanks again Jana for allowing me to capture your little one. GOTCHA!! I know that you probably think that this is the best one from our session, but I've got some keepers for sure. I just thought that this one would make you giggle.

When I do sessions with small children, I would say that about 80% of the digital negatives that I download look something like this, but there are always the ones that make it worth all of the stress of preserving precious times with your little ones.

His mom told me that he was awake a lot of the day, so I was a bit worried when we started the session, but he drifted off to sleep and stayed asleep for the entire session. I was asked by a good friend to cover Jazmin Whitley's show at Phoenix Fashion Week. My friend does her shows in California and he set me up to be able to have back stage access during the fashion show. Thanks Jeff for setting this up for me! I didn't know this until about a week ago (we don't have cable anymore :( ), but Jazmin has a show about her fashion line on MTV called House of Jazmin. Life Celebrated {Photographer Donating Session}

I heard about a fantastic story via my Give Away (a few posts down). Amy and Drew adopted a little boy just a few weeks ago. Amy entered my drawing and then two of her friends entered my drawing and donated their entries to Amy. What sweet friends!

I would LOVE to do a complimentary session for you. I'll throw in a proof book too! I recently joined a group of photographers that donates our time and talents to celebrate the most special moments in life, Life Celebrated. Where to buy cute clothing for photos? {Gilbert, AZ Photographer}

It's been a while since I've done an "advice" post, so here you go! I have a lot of parents that ask where to buy unique cute clothing for pictures. Below is a list of links to different sites that I personally LOVE and would purchase all of my/my children's clothing from if money grew on trees! We all know that it doesn't, but I do think that family/children's pictures definitely warrant an investment in some great new unique ensembles. Even if you don't have the funds to purchase clothing from the sites listed below, browse through their sites and pay attention to how they put their outfits together. You can do the same thing with a little creativity.

Disclamer: The clothing that my children were wearing in our family photos were from Target. You can definitely coordinate and/or come up with some creative clothing selections on a budget too!

Bright and colorful HATS and SCARVES are an easy way to add something extra for an individual shot of a child or an adult. We borrowed Papa's fedora and put it on each grandchild in our family photos.

P.S. I promise that I will have some pictures of someone besides my family up again really soon! I have 4 sessions in the next week... and I am also going to be taking some pictures for a designer at Phoenix Fashion Week on Thursday. So lots of pictures to come.

We took family pictures earlier this week. Thanks to my friend Amber for coming down to help us with the large family shots. Pictures were hectic... as they always are with little ones. My mom even made the comment that she didn't think that we ended up with any keepers because kids were all running around being crazy... but I think that we got plenty. I hope that you enjoy!

Baby Photography {East Valley Photographer}

When your first baby comes, you just don't realize how quickly they grow and change and keep changing, darn it all!! 6 months go by and this little person is absolutely, completely different. Another 3 months and completely different again. You blink and you miss it. That's where my camera steps in.

Doing a full year of baby pictures can be one of the most meaningful memories of your child. My friend didn't think of it until her third baby, but her very first girl. She regretted letting the time go by so quickly with her two boys and was determined to not make the same mistake with her princess. Kariah was an infant, just 3 weeks old at her first photo shoot, and yes, she even peed on Mom. It was priceless!

She came again at three months old in her handmade blessing gown. At around six months we were doing their family pictures anyway, so we made sure to get a couple adorable portaits of just the baby. At nine months she was cooing and crawling around and trying to make things difficult. By a year, Kariah was walking right out of the shot!

Kariah's first year has come and gone, time that her Mommy can never get back. But those pictures, well those are forever.

Sibling Photography {Gilbert, Arizona Photographer}

I hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend. Below is a picture of three siblings that I have been photographing for the last two years. Aren't they gorgeous?? Looks like they walked out of a magazine, right? I mean those eyes... WOW! A big part of the reason why I love this picture so much is because the sibling's connection feels very genuine to me. It is obvious that the three of them spend a lot of time together and they feel very connected.

Attitudes are key for a family shoots. It is so important for a family to just be THEMSELVES during a photo session. As a photographer, I am just along for the ride. I love to catch a genuine connection between a husband and wife or between siblings, in this case. This family is a favorite of mine because of their low key, laid back style. You can just feel it through the image.

I would say that YOUR family is at least 50% of the equation when it comes to taking portraits. Keep that in mind the next time you prepare for your portrait session. What is most important isn't necessarily the new haircuts or fancy clothes, but the connection that is portrayed. This is what you'll look back on years from now and appreciate most.

October Mini Session Full

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you know that the October mini session is full. I still have two opening for my September mini session so let me know if you are interested in those. I am also still scheduling family portrait sessions and have a few more dates available this month and throughout the remainder of the year... and as always, a photo from a Christmas session that I did last year. I was able to photograph these siblings and all of their children as a surprise for their parents. So fun!

Recession Christmas Mini Sessions {Gilbert Arizona Photographer}

Wow! I thought that the heat wave was over... apparently not. I'm just itching to get outside and do some outdoor sessions. No such luck in Arizona. Can you say CABIN FEVER!? Hopefully in a few more weeks things will be cooling down enough to where it's bearable for me and my clients to do some outdoor family sessions. For now, we're stuck inside :o)

Soon enough, my schedule will be in full swing, which brings me to my next thought. I've had a few clients mention doing a mini session this year. Times are tight for everyone, and I totally get that. I am thinking I might schedule a few dates in September and October for Recession Christmas Mini Sessions. I would pick a spot, (possibly Downtown Mesa or Gilbert or Seville Country Club) and have a few families lined up back to back at the same place. So in essence, you'd be splitting you session fee.

Here is my thought.

With Christmas right around the corner, I was looking for a way to give back. I was lucky enough to stumble across this great website and idea called Life Celebrated. This is a group of photographers that donates their time and talents to "giving the gift of memories." As soon as I read about them, I decided to join their cause.

This way, you're document your family in a way that isn't complete torture to your young kiddos, and even show fun sides to your family relationships.

After all, the intention is to make your family as comfortable as possible and to get some great shots of your family that will be keepsakes for years. Family Portraits with Small Children {Phoenix Children's Photographer

The goal of the family portrait: memories and smiles frozen in time, something that you can look back on for years that will bring you back to certain time in your family’s life. But getting to that goal is not so easy, is it?

One of the biggest frustrations that I hear from parents of young children is that they are not cooperating or listening during the photo shoot. Here you’ve spent time, energy and money making this one photography session a success and little Bobby can’t muster up one nice smile at the same time as little Susie???

All I can say is that kids aren’t born to sit still and look cute. My best piece of advice would be to make it a fun experience. Relax and don't get frustrated if everyone isn't sitting up straight, looking at the camera and smiling. It's completely understandable.

In my opinion, family portraits are to document your family and each
individual's personality. That is why I like to do some photos where
the kids are required to look at the camera and smile, and a lot of
shots where they are interacting with each other or playing with mom and dad. These types of shots are called lifestyle portraits.

Here are few great tips for taking Family Portraits with Small Children:

1. Bring their favorite toy, or a rattle to get their attention. It can be used next to the photographer to bring their eyes to the camera. For example, get everyone’s attention and smiles having “Dora” share kisses, and then have her give the photographer a kiss. Snap! All the kids are naturally smiling and their eyes are all in the same direction.

2. If you're going to be in the pictures too, bring a friend or family
member that can get them to smile easily. As the photographer, I can
only do so much, especially if they haven't ever seen me before. If
they see a familiar face, they are much more likely to smile for that
person.

3. Make sure that your kids have eaten. Hungry tummies make for
grouchy faces.

4. Bring a water bottle or sippy cup, especially in the Phoenix heat.

5. Try not to get frustrated even if your kiddos aren't cooperating.
If they sense that you are upset with them it will definitely not help
the situation and they will probably end up frustrated too.

6. Bribe them... As a parent of three, this is not typical parenting
advice that I hand out, but for special occasions like family
pictures, you have to pull out all the stops... Tell them you'll take
them to get ice cream or buy them a small toy if they are well
behaved, cooperate and listen well during our photo session.

7. Choose your 3 most important shots to take first. Most children's
attention span is not very long, so they get bored after the first few
shots that I take. Almost without fail, my first 30 frames in my
camera are the best 30 from the entire session.

8. Lower your expectations... expect that every part of your child's
personality will be captured in a photo session. When your kids are young, consider yourself lucky to get a few group shots with all of them looking at the camera. Even though everyone may not be smiling and sitting up straight, they will still be cherished memories for years to come.

I hope that these tips are helpful, as they have been gained

The Hub's cousin left on a 2 year mission for our church. His aunt asked me to do some family portraits before he left. Unfortunately, with his older brother away at college we weren't able to coordinate our schedules to get together to do a whole session. Here's a picture that I took of them on Sunday after his farewell. I LOVE her BLUE dress. It's such a beautiful color.

Make-up Tips for Photo Sessions {Phoenix Photographer}

So, I've had lots of moms and seniors ask me my opinion about how much or how little make-up you should wear for their next portrait session.

Most people want to look like the best version of themselves in their family or senior picture. To do this, I would suggest that you put on the make-up that you wear on a normal day.... and then add a layer or two. My lens, as with any camera, is not able to see all of the color that the human eye sees.

Take a picture of yourself with your own camera at home. You will notice that all of the colors in the portrait are a much more subdued version of what you see in the mirror. So, next time you are prepping for your portrait session with me, make sure to take your make-up routine up a notch or two. However, you can overdo it. I'm definitely not saying that you should show up for portraits looking like the bride of Frankenstein!

If you feel like you'd like to give it a try on your own, here are a few tips that should help you you look for your best for your photography session. Make sure to choose colors that are complimentary to your skin tones. So, here's a quick lesson on determining your skin tone.

If you look at the underside of your forearm and your veins appear blue, then your skin tone is cool and if you look and they appear green, then you are considered a warm skin tone. Cool skin tones look better in jewel toned make-up while warm skin tones look better in earth tones.

Stay minimal with your eye make up for pictures. Your eyes are the most important part of a picture, not your eyeliner and mascara. You just want to wear enough to give your eyes a nice pop. Make sure to add a little blush, even if you don't wear in normally. It will make you look more youthful and lively... and don't forget about lip gloss. Besides the eyes, your next most important feature is your smile so you want to make sure to make it stand out. Even if you are not a big fan of adding color to your lips, be sure to add some shine to accent your gorgeous smile. Use foundation, but be sure not to use one with a reflective quality to it. Here in Phoenix, it's important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun's rays, but be sure not to use too much moisturizer or sun screen underneath your foundation on the day of your next portrait session. Your skin is reflective and you will look shiny in your photos.

In the photograph above, a great balance was achieved. She wore enough make up that her skin tone was nice and even but not cakey, her eyes were done enough to make them pop but when you look at the picture you aren't distracted by her eyeliner. Also, her lipstick simply accented her beautiful smile.

A great suggestion for those that feel like they are "make-up challenged" would be to set an appointment at your nearest department store and have them do your make up for your photo session. When you do this you need to keep in mind that you will need to drop some dough on new make-up... but who couldn't use a new lip gloss or blush? Also, be sure to them know that you are having your pictures taken and that you still want to look like yourself... especially if you plan on going to the MAC make-up counter. I've come away from that place looking like a whole new person, and that's definitely not what you're looking to do when you're taking family portraits.

So you’re looking around and realizing the last time your whole family in a picture was 4 cousins ago. It’s time for a new family picture but then comes the age old question – What on earth are we going to wear?

The first step is deciding “Is this formal or casual?” Here in Phoenix, photography tends to be pretty casual. Formal pictures are typically best at the nearest family wedding, when everyone is going to be dressed to the nines anyway.
Before every Mom in the family has a heart attack, trying to figure out how to make everyone look good, it’s best to agree on a color family. Then let everyone pick from there. That way the large family photo can look unified while everyone retains their individual look.

It’s tempting to just put everyone in jeans and the same shirt but trust me; it’s worth it to have some contrast. For example the family below picked blacks and greys as their color theme. See how the greys pop out from the blacks, yet everyone looks like they belong together? This combination allows for Grandma to be comfortable in black (so slimming!), and for others to get crazy in grey, yet it all looks good together.

My favorite part of this family photo is even though we’re in the desert; we can still make it look like a tropical paradise! Phoenix photography at its best!

Sick Kids {Phoenix Children's Photographer}

What do you do if you wake up the morning of a scheduled photography session and your kiddos are sick. Well, this is what happened to one of my unlucky moms. Merri was braver than I would be and we attempted to get some pictures. At the end of the session, we decided to have them come back this morning and get a few more to finish up their session.

My best advice would be to call the photographer and see about getting your shoot rescheduled. While I can't speak for other photographers, I would much rather be shooting a happy baby than one that wants to be sleeping in her bed. Merri's kiddos were troopers, especially for not feeling well. Here are a few shots from our two mini sessions this week.

By the way, I LOVE outtakes. You're always guaranteed to get a few with each session that I shoot. I love to catch sweet moments between siblings or family members like this one.

Styling Kids for Phoenix Photography

Cute kids, check! Great photographer, check! Kids clothes, uh oh, here comes the headache. How are we going to dress these beautiful children so that their photos are the best they can be?

Photography for kids is one part styling and one part comfort and confidence. Your best chances for success lie in your child being just as invested in the photograph as you are. Decide on a color family or color combination and then let them help you pick out their own outfits. This is our family photo from last year. Thanks to my sister Brooke. My middle daughter Peyton insisted on wearing this new pink and brown cheetah sweater that her grandma had purchased for her. It was her favorite shirt. So, what did we do? we worked around it, and I think it turned out perfect, for our family!

My girls have had an opinion about their clothes and accessories since they were toddlers. I have found I don’t even have to ask for a smile when they are wearing an outfit that they just love, not to mention their confidence goes sky high! When kids are comfortable and confident, the photographer’s job is half done and from there, we can get those smiles, laughs, and moments you’re paying for.

Things that look too loud or crazy in real life are usually perfect for photography. So let them go wild, even try a few accessories. Let them pick their hairstyle. I know it sounds crazy but you’ll end up with children’s portraits that truly capture how unique they are.

Picking Colors for Large Family Photography

Family pictures here in Phoenix tend to be pretty casual, which I think makes the best pictures. It’s easy to smile and pretend like you’re having a great time when you have on your favorite pair of jeans. And jeans are the go-to staple for family portraits because it’s one less thing you have to buy. Everyone already has a great pair of jeans.

So the next step is to pick color combinations or color families that work well with jeans. Crisp white always look nice but add a contrasting color to make it pop. I love this family photo in the jeans, white, green and brown. Everyone looks confident and cute, yet the colors make the family unified as well.

Blue and brown are colors we just can’t get enough of in family pictures, they compliment a wide variety skin tones and it’s easy to find clothes that work. I love how in this portrait Mom and Baby have their ruffles, the stripes look great on Dad, and everyone looks so put together.

Keep in mind that the smaller the family, the more color you can add to each person's look. Pick a focus color and a few complimentary colors for accessories and accents. You won't regret adding a bit of color!
Other combinations that work great in family photographs are black with pops of red, …….
Go in your closet and see what colors you love. What outfit do you put on to when you want to feel your best? On that note, Mom you should pick your outfit first and then find coordinating clothes for Dad and kids. Trust me; you will be more picky about how the family pictures turn out than anyone else. So you might as well look and feel your best. I hope this helps next time that you go to pick out your wardrobe for your family pictures.

I just got back from shooting an open house tonight. The happy couple got married last weekend in Utah, where he is from and then they went on their honeymoon and had their open house this weekend, where she is from. This couple was so much fun and up for anything. We only had about 10 minutes to get shots of the two of them, the bulk of their bridals were done up in Utah. Here are two of my favorites from quickly sorting through the night.

Now it's off to bed for me. I need to wake up early so that I can plan my lesson for my church calling!! Procrastination isn't my friend this week :o)

I was lucky enough to shoot engagements and a few wedding snapshots of this gorgeous couple. We went out to Mike's parent's home in Gold Canyon to shoot these desert themed engagement pictures. Nicole, being the girly girl that she is, wore wooden wedges for shoes. She was a champ... we had to hike around boulders and through trees to get some of these shots. We all ended up with stickers in our jeans but the results made it worth it to me. Congrats to the happy couple!

As with all senior session, it took them about 10 minutes to loosen up, but once they did, we had so much fun. With three young kiddos, all at home for the summer, life has been crazy, but I've found a few moments to get this blog started. We've had our website for 3 years now and we have had great success with it. I just feel like a blog is so much more personal and it's a great way for potential clients to get to know me and my style. I also want to document my photography session for memories sake.
